Massud / Ariana films collection

Afghanistan : the Massud Collection, an exclusive take on modern history

Ariana Films, a film production company set up by the Northern Alliance leader Commander Massud in 1982, entrusted INA with 1 400 hours of video footage.

To explore and analyse the numerous war memories from the inside.

You will be plunged into the heart of the war that ran from 1982 to 2001 between Massud's armed forces and the Soviet-Afghani troops. The footage shows the struggle and the resistance, and features a number of moving portraits of both civilian and military fighters, and scenes of everyday life… In one video, Massud studies Kabul through his binoculars and talks on the phone to a group leader. In another, his officers listen to their leader addressing them. Others feature different protagonists, including the kamikaze assassins who killed Massud, and his young son attending his funeral, surrounded by a despairing crowd.

INA and Ariana Films

Since 2002, an exclusive distribution agreement that covers these 1 400 hours is part of a cooperation programme between INA and the Afghani television company and its production companies (Afghan Films, Afghan TV and Ariana Films).

«Knowing that there is an institution that is interested in images and wants to save them is very positive”. - Youssuf Janessar, Commander Massud's cameraman, Ina, September 2007
