French Open

The 2012 French Open will be held at the Roland Garros stadium from 27 May to 10 June. Amongst the French players, ten men and five women will be competing at the Open this year. Both the men’s and women’s singles tournaments will feature 128 players. Many players from regions such as Latin America and Southern Europe, where tennis is played mainly on clay courts, look on the French Open as the most important event of the year. As the playing surface is slow, and matches last for up to 5 sets (with no tie-break in the fifth set), Roland-Garros is generally considered the most difficult and physically demanding tennis tournament. Check out the whole Roland-Garros collection thanks to the FFT’s link-up with Inamédiapro.

A square bears her name in Paris, and a Dalida coin was minted following her death on 3 May 1987. Inamédiapro highlights all the key dates in Dalida’s career.

The Furiani stadium

The Furiani stadium is the largest soccer stadium in Corsica, and hosts the home matches of the Sporting Club de Bastia. In 1992, the stadium was to host the semi-final of the French Cup between Bastia and Olympique de Marseille. Excited at the prospect of bumper gate receipts, Corsican officials hastily had a provisional stand erected with a capacity of 10,000 people. The stand was set up with scant attention to safety rules, and no control authority intervened to stop the installation. A few minutes before kick-off on 5 May, the provisional stand collapsed, killing 18 people and injuring some 2800 others. Footage of the disaster is available on Inamédiapro.
