This selection of documents shows French prisons over the years, both inside and out, the prisoners and the buildings themselves. It highlights the evolution of the ways in which prisoners are considered, sociologically and politically, from prison as a means of rehabilitation (after the post-war years) to prison as a punishment.

See Theme-based collectionOn June 3, 1974, eight-year-old Marie Dolorès Rambla, was kidnapped in Marseille and found dead. Christian Ranucci, 20, was arrested and admitted the murder before withdrawing his confession and claiming his innocence. The Ranucci case was held in Aix-en-Provence on March 9 and 10, 1976. Ranucci was condemned to death and executed on July 28, 1976.
See Theme-based collectionOn February 6, 1998 at 9:15 pm, in the centre of Ajaccio, the Prefect for Corsica, Claude Erignac, was shot with three bullets to the head. On June 2, 2003, eight of the nine people allegedly responsible for the murder were brought to court. On July 4, 2003, the alleged assassin, Yvan Colonna, was arrested. The case is still under way.

He managed to escape from the police during a long time before being arrested the March 26th, 1998 and sentenced to life imprisonment subject to an 22 year period of unconditional detention. See Theme-based collectionOn January 9, 1975, 76-year-old Elise Meilhan was assassinated in La Rochelle. Before she died, she pronounced the name of Mauvillain to her doctor. With neither motive nor proof, Guy Mauvillain was condemned to 18 years in prison. He was released in 1981, having served six years.In 1985, the case was reopened and he was acquitted and compensated.
