    • US astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. As 600 million TV viewers looked on, Armstrong spoke the words that have become legendary: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".
    • With his first place in the final stage, Eddy Merckx won his first Tour de France. The great Belgian champion went on to win the Tour again in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974.

    • Inauguration of the TGV to the Atlantic

    • In 1989, the TGV was brought into service on train lines from Paris’ Montparnasse Station to the west of Brittany and down to the Basque Country. Today, the trains can reach speeds of 300 km per hour.
